Working Principle


The working principle of a series excited motor is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, which generates torque through the interaction between the armature and the excitation winding, thereby achieving the normal operation of the motor.


Series excited motor, also known as single-phase series excited motor, is a type of AC and DC dual-purpose motor, and its working principle can be simply summarized as electromagnetic rotation principle. This type of motor consists of an armature and an excitation winding, with the armature winding connected to an external power source and the excitation winding connected to the armature winding. When an external power source is applied, a magnetic field is generated inside the armature winding, which interacts with the magnetic field inside the excitation winding to generate an electromagnetic torque. This electromagnetic torque can start the motor to rotate. During the operation of the motor, due to the rotational motion of the armature winding, its internal magnetic field will also rotate, and the magnetic field of the excitation winding is constant. Therefore, relative motion will occur between these two magnetic fields, resulting in induced electromotive force. The direction of this induced electromotive force is opposite to the direction of the current in the armature winding, thereby reducing the total electromotive force of the armature winding. This phenomenon is called "back electromotive force". As the back electromotive force is related to the speed of the motor, as the speed of the motor increases, the back electromotive force will also increase correspondingly, and ultimately equal to the electromotive force of the external power source. In this case, the total electromotive force of the armature winding is zero, and the motor is in steady-state operation.


The working principle of a series excited motor is similar to that of a DC motor, explained by the left-hand and right-hand rules. When powered by DC power, current enters from the left coil, passes through the rotor winding, and flows out from the right coil. According to the magnetic effect of current, the stator winding will generate a magnetic field in the direction from N to S in the diagram. At the same time, the rotor winding that receives the current will be subjected to electromagnetic force, and the direction of the force can be determined based on the left-hand rule. The force acting on the coil within the range of N and S poles is the same, but in different directions, and the electromagnetic torque will cause the rotor to start rotating. The combination of electromagnetic force and inertia causes the rotor to rotate for half a cycle. Due to the presence of a commutator, the direction of the current flowing into the rotor coil will change, keeping the direction of the force within the N and S ranges unchanged, and the rotor will continue to rotate.


In practical applications, series excited motors are widely used in fields such as electric tools, kitchen supplies, and floor care due to their advantages of high speed, large starting torque, small size, and light weight.
