Powerful AC induction motors have gradually developed into standard motor design types, characterized by high efficiency and attractive prices.
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has developed a specification for NEMA A A, B, C, and D motor types, which standardizes typical motor characteristics such as starting current, slip, and torque points to adapt to various load applications.

The following is an outline of NEMA motor types:

Type A: Conventional starting torque (usually 150-170% of rated), corresponding to high starting current. The ultimate torque is the highest among all NEMA types. Able to handle heavy loads in a short period of time. The slip is less than or equal to 5%. A typical application is the motor of injection molding machinery.

Type B: It is the motor with the most types among AC induction motors. Its starting torque is similar to that of Type A, but sometimes even lower, providing a lower starting current. However, in industrial applications, it locks the rotor torque and still allows for starting the load. The slip is less than or equal to 5%. The motor efficiency and full load power factor are relatively high. Typical applications include pumps, fans, and machine tools.

Type C: Provides high starting torque (higher than Type A and B, typically exceeding 200% of rated). It is commonly used to drive heavy start loads. These motors can run almost at full speed without overload. Low starting current. The slip is less than or equal to 5%.
Type D: Among all NEMA motor types, it is the motor that can provide the highest starting torque. Low starting current and full load speed. High speed difference (5-13%), the motor is suitable for mechanical applications where there is no load change or drastic change in the motor's operating speed, such as the energy storage of the speed control wheel. Many types of subcategories also include a wider range of transitions. This type of motor is usually specially customized.

These motors have different speed torque characteristics. The stator rotor torque (starting torque) refers to the minimum torque generated when the rotor stops, which is the rated voltage and frequency. Ultimate torque is the maximum torque that occurs before a sudden decrease in motor speed, resulting in rated speed (rated voltage and frequency). The pull-up torque is the minimum torque that occurs when the motor's speed reaches the speed point from a stop, at which point the ultimate torque occurs.
